CASE STUDY

US Retail Case Study Overview

Quick Facts about Back-to-School:

  • Back-to-School is the second most significant season of the year (behind the US holiday season) for consumer technology retail in the US. In addition to providing retailers with a temporary bump in sales, Back-to-School can act as an important indicator of consumer spending as retailers plan stocking levels going into the holiday season.
  • Sales typically increase by 10-20% for the months of August and September vs. the seasonally slower June and July sales levels.
  • Back-to-School sales begins in late July, peaks at the end of Aug, and dissolves by late Sept.

Early Views on 2009 Back-to-School Season:

  • The 2009 season is off to a strong start for consumer technology products.
  • While retailers have seen strong sales, they have been conservative in inventory build-up and thus OEMs may not have experienced the level of sales increase comparable to the retailers.
